9TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY BABY SOWER
The Soroptimist’s of the Coos Bay Area will hold their 9th annual Community Baby Shower on March 2, 2012 at Pony Village Mall from 11am-3pm.
We are teaming with the Department of Human Services to collect new items for the low-income mothers and their babies. All items will go to the baby closet at DHS where they will be distributed to those in need.
This year, their major need is for diapers, wipes, pacifiers, onesies, and warm sleepers, but anything would be greatly appreciated.

FREE NAMI FAMILY SUPPORT MEETINGS
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (also known as NAMI) was founded in 1979 as the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. NAMI is a nation-wide American advocacy group, representing families and people affected by mental illness as a non-profit grass roots organization and has affiliates in every American state and in thousands of local communities in the country. NAMI's mission is to provide support, education, advocacy, and research for people and their families living with mental illness through various public education and awareness activities.

BAY AREA CONCERT BAND EARLY SPRING CONCERT
The Bay Area Concert Band will be offering a early spring concert on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the North Bend Presbyterian Church located on Pony Creek Road. The 7:30 performance will be under the direction of Mark Allen, and guest conductor, Bob Campbell.
The concert will include a nice variety of light classical and traditional band music.
Plan on attending this delightful concert and supporting members of your community. The concert is free with donations appreciated that go towards music scholarships for students. Due to the generosity of our past audiences the Concert Band was able to provide a $500.00 scholarship to a SWOCC student as well as making a $1500.00 contribution to the North Bend High School Marching Band.
COOS COUNTY EXTENSION SERVICE HEALTHY HEART WORKSHOP
February is Heart Health Month and to celebrate, OSU Extension Family & Community Health is offering a free 2-hour heart-healthy workshop. This comprehensive strategy session will provide easy and practical tips for lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk for heart disease. You’ll learn about the progression of the number one killer of Americans, and what you can do to improve risk. Workshop is taught by Stephanie Polizzi, Registered Dietitian and Certified Health Education Specialist.
Class will be held at Bandon Community Library conference room on Monday, Feb 27th from 1-3 PM. Previous participants commented this class really helped them lower their cholesterol. BUNCO BASH – HAWAIIAN STYLE
Bunco players~~get out your tropical shirts and sunglasses! Warm up with a night of fun Friday, February 24 at the Reedsport Eagles Lodge, in support of Great Afternoons & Great Beginnings.
All Bunco players, individuals or clubs, are invited. Guys are welcome, too. No Bunco experience is necessary.
The entry fee is $30 per person. Prizes will be awarded for most wins, most losses and most Buncos in each playing group. By popular demand, game play will be expanded to five rounds.
All groups will follow a common set of rules. Light refreshments will be provided. A no-host bar is available. There will be additional fun from door prizes, 50/50, and raffles. This event is limited to adults.

FUNDRAISER FOR REEDSPORT AREA FOOD BANKS
A fundraiser will be held for the Reedsport area food banks at Fishpatrick's Crabby Cafe in Winchester Bay. It will happen on Thursday, Feb 23rd from 2pm-9pm. The total of all money spent on food and drinks, as well as all tips received during this time period will be donated to the food banks by the employees and owners of the Crabby Cafe. No hold backs for expenses, all revenues will be donated. We will serve off our open menu with all items available."

Lower Umpqua Hospital is hosting a series of free public presentations over various health-related topics entitled “Care to talk about…”
The next to be offered is Care to talk about…Your Diet on Tuesday, February 28, at 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the LUH conference room with Jackie Brown, Registered Dietician for Lower Umpqua Hospital.
Jackie will talk about how what we eat affects our health and answer questions about eating properly.

SPECIAL SERVICES AT FOURSQUARE CHURCH
On Friday, March 2 at 7:00 pm, Reedsport Foursquare Church will be hosting prophetic evangelist John Mark Pool. He is co-founder of Word to the World Ministries, and has been used by God to minister as a prophetic voice to the nations. Based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he is called to take the Apostolic/Prophetic five-fold ministry message to pastors and church leaders across the USA and around the world. He and his wife, Sandy are both ordained as a prophet and ministers with Jim Goll of Encounters Network Ministries.
John Mark has been ministering on radio, TV, Internet Streaming Broadcast and Web Publishing Sites as well as local churches, conferences and crusade revival outpourings. He has been featured on Sid Roth’s It’s Supernatural; Prophetic TV with Steve Shultz of Elijah List. The Miracle Channel’s The Plumbline Program, with Faisal & Sabina Malick with Covenant of Life Ministries. His message is to prepare the leaders of the nations to come into the unity of the Body of Christ for the power of agreement in prayer. John Mark also prophesies to pastors, church and Kingdom leaders to bring a completion of the release of the real prophetic gifts into the Church.
Evangelist Roger Smets will be speaking Sunday Night, March 4, at 6:30 PM. His prophetic ministry focuses on praying the promises of verbatim Bible verses to many individuals. His speaking is practical in nature and vividly related to everyday life bringing hope, healing, forgiveness and deliverance into the lives of countless individuals. Firmly anchored in the word of God, people can be assured they are getting a “good word” when they come to this meeting.
Rev. Smets has memorized hundreds of scriptures from the Bible and speaks them freely as he prays with people. As a result, thousands of people around the world have been encouraged, refreshed and set free with a “Word from the Lord.”

BACKGROUND ON THE LOWER UMPQUA FLYCASTERS
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters, a non-profit fly fishing club based in Reedsport, Oregon, was founded in 1990 to accommodate persons with all levels of fly fishing and fly tying skills. The club is a member of the Oregon Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers.
Club meetings and special sessions have featured fly-tying, rod building, leader construction, fly casting, and many other activities. Outings have included fly fishing for trout, half pounders, and salmon. In addition, the club hosts an annual Tube-O-Rama float trip on the Umpqua River fishing for smallmouth bass.
Each year, LUFC sponsors a Fly Fishing Expo to introduce the sport of fly fishing to the general public. The Expo features lectures and demonstrations by experts in fly fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and conservation.
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters work with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife on projects that pertain to the conservation and restoration of coastal streams and the enhancement of local fisheries.
The club has also supported and assisted in teaching a special extension class at Southwestern Oregon Community College for the past four years on Elementary Fly Fishing.
ORCHESTRA CONCERT TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE
Tickets for the Winter program of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) are now available at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. They can be purchased during regular business hours at the bank's Information Desk through Friday, February 24. Admission price is $10 per person. Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before concert.
The music of American composers will be featured in this Winter program of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) scheduled for Sunday, February 26, at 2 P.M. The concert will be held at the Pacific Auditorium, located on the campus of the Reedsport Community Charter Schools.
Premier performances of new works by Florence composers Robin DeVour and Charles Perkins are highlighted in this concert. Other American composers such as Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, Percy Grainger, and John Knowles Paine are also included.

CULTURAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
The Douglas County Cultural Coalition is accepting grant applications from local art, heritage and humanities organizations or projects. Grants range from $250 to $1,000. Deadline is March 31, 2012. Applications can be requested by email at jcoyne8@yahoo.com or sramseywatson@gmail.com. Or one can be picked up at Douglas County Library branches during their regular business hours.
The Douglas County Cultural Coalition’s purpose is to support cultural participation in all forms throughout the county and is funded through the generous support of the Oregon Cultural Trust (OCT). The projects have to be involved with heritage, arts and the humanities. This year the funds received total $13,342 which approximates less than thirteen cents per resident. You can support the Oregon Cultural Trust by selecting a cultural trust license plate and by donating funds to the trust and receiving an income tax credit.
The group is also seeking members to join the board and assist in the coalitions mission of supporting the arts, humanities and heritage.
In the Coastal Douglas area, the fund has supported: Tsalila, Riverfront Rhythms, the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra, Great Afternoons, Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance and the Friends of Umpqua River Light.

COOS COUNTY EXTENSION SERVICE MASTER FOOD PRESERVER VOLUNTEER TRAINING
The Master Food Preserver volunteers provide great community workshops like Canning Tuna, Artisan Breads and cheese-making.
Now you can join the volunteers in sharing safe preservation techniques with the community by becoming a trained OSU Extension volunteer.
Enroll now in the Food Safety and Preservation training beginning March 24th. Training covers preservation techniques in drying, freezing, smoking, pickling, making jams/jellies and safely canning meats, fish and vegetables.
Graduates of the training are Master Food Preservers certified by OSU Extension Family & Community Health. Training also includes the state food handler’s certification.
Training consists of home study materials and 4 hands-on practicums where you practice your skills with veteran volunteers.
First training date is Saturday, Mar 24th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Bandon Community Library. The remaining practicums (Apr 15th, Apr 28th and May 12th) will be held at the OSU Extension office in Myrtle Point, 9 AM to 5 PM. Class fee is $135.00 (some scholarships available). Registration deadline is March 12th.

"S. L. Donaldson's dynamic use of acrylic and ink in her paintings elegantly conveys the impact of positive and negative environmental factors on plants. The paintings explore the influences of such things as sunlight, wind, and water on plant growth within the local landscape and reflect the artist's love of the Oregon Coast."

The Jazz Festival Board is looking forward to the 2012 season with our
kick-off preview event with The Young Bucks on Jan 20th at the Mill Casino Salmon Room at 7pm. Dancers and music enthusiasts from northern California, Medford, Roseburg, Eugene and Portland, plan to attend again this year, as the Clambake Jazz Festival has developed a reputation as a favorite.
The main Festival will kick off at 7pm, Thursday, March 8th, with a Warm-up Party at the Salmon Room of The Mill Casino, with the music of The Young Bucs, followed by The Stolen Sweets Jazz Band. Admission: $10 or $8 with All-Events Badge.

Celebrate National Nutrition Month by learning how foods can work to improve your health. Applied Nutrition, a 2-day workshop sponsored by OSU Extension Family & Community Health, has been moved to March.
Workshop starts with basic nutrition and meal planning progressing to discussion of disease prevention and weight management. This course is a must-have for everyone but is also perfect for teachers, nurses and anyone who plans meals for others. Course is taught by Stephanie Polizzi, Registered Dietitian and Certified Health Education Specialist, through OSU Extension Family & Community Health.
